Dear reader: As the request of several parents and students, the writers of the Conejo Chinese Cultural Association Newsletter have compiled a guide of surrounding high schools. Each school summary includes both perinent statistics for easy comparison and a brief synopsis describing the general atmosphere of the campus. We hope that the information provided will help both students and parents become familiar with the offerings and quality of local educational facilities. Although this issue showcases area high schools, future newsletter issuses will report on local middle schools, so stay tuned. Agoura High School is situated just west of the San Fernando Valley in a suburban, residential, high-income community. Students are from the incorporated cities of Westlake Village and Agoura Hills, as wells as areas to the south of the Santa Monica Mountains. Agoura High is a National Blue Ribbon school and received a full six-year accreditation in June of 1996 from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Classes run on block schedule in which classes meet every other day for 113 minutes. Students can be active in student government and leadership, two dozen clubs, drama presentations, music programs, yearbook, newspaper, and a competitive sports league. As Angela Sun says, "Agoura High is a great learning environment where I can expand my mind but also have fun. GO CHARGERS!!!!" |

Situated in the western end of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, Calabasas High first opened its doors in the fall of 1975. Just recently named a California Distinguished School, Calabasas is living up to this honor as it undergoes a massive operation to build a new administration office and thereby making new classrooms for the growing number of students each year. In addition to their strong teaching staff, CHS students have extensive support from counselors, a college and career advisor, school psychologist, speech and language therapist, library clerk, health clerk, plant manager, and all other classified personnel. With an immense variety of sports, clubs, and activities from an equestrian team to the Paintball Club to Envirothon, each student has the opportunity to find his/her niche or create one if it doesn_t already exist. As the title of the 1998-99 yearbook declares, there_s "Always Something New" at CHS. |

Oak Park High School is located in the eastern portion of Ventura County. The school campus is an excellent facility stationed in rolling, oak covered hills. The campus gives the impression of openness and freedom from congestion. Oak Park_s courses mostly prepare students for entrance into UC or Cal State universities. The school has won a National Blue Ribbon and has a renowned staff that put Oak Park in the top 115 schools in the nation. The dropout rate is virtually zero due in large part to the small teacher to student ratio. Oak Park, as a whole, is a very tiny school with a student population of just over 800 students. This allows for students to get to know the staff better and make it easier for students to "shine". Royal High School is a Blue Ribbon School and its alumni was formed in 1996. Royal has a comprehensive library that includes twelve computers. Students may access the internet and use a word processor to finish their homework. Royal provides computer aided math and English programs. They also have a nationally ranked choral music program, a state recognized work experience program, a nationally recognized award winning newspaper, a state recognized speech and debate program, and a highly ranked water polo team. Annie Kou, a former student of Royal High School, says, "The teachers of Royal High are great path finders. I have been directed on the path to success thanks to Royal High School." |
Simi Valley High School

Simi Valley High is a California Distinguished School that will soon be entering its seventy-ninth year. As of last year, 92 teachers, 44% of which have advanced degrees, taught the 2,329 students enrolled in grades 9 through 12. Simi Valley offers a variety of classes in 9 departments in addition to extra-curricular clubs, activities, and interscholastic competitions, including sports teams, fine arts ensembles and competitive academic teams (e.g. Academic Decathlon, Mock Trial, and Knowledge Bowl). The student body is comprised of 25% minority races with 6.6% of the total student body being Asian, 2% Filipino, and 0.2% pacific islander. "It is a great school, the teachers are interesting and the students are nice," says Julia Lee who will be a senior in fall of _99. |
Thousand Oaks High School

Thousand Oaks High School, a California top 100 school, was started in 1962 and has a student population of about 2400 students. The student body is composed of a variety of students of different backgrounds and cultures, 6.8% of whom are Asian. There are many clubs and organizations on campus that the student can join such as the band, which has marched in the Rose Parade in 1999; journalism and yearbook, both of which are ranked within the top 10 in the nation; athletics, or any of the many clubs offered by the school. The TOHS mascot is best personified by the lancer statue made of melted spoons and hubcaps in the quad. Once a month there is a rally to get the Lancers together and to show some Lancer spirit. All in all, TOHS is a fun yet academically strong school. |
Westlake High School

Westlake High School is large enough to have diversification and small enough to have warmth. Classes are offered at multi-levels to accommodate students_ needs. WHS offers technology training and opportunities for enrichment in business, industrial arts, consumer/family studies, art and music. Westlake High places high priority on recreational and academic activities and offers tremendous opportunities for the students. Westlake is a Blue Ribbon school and in 1994 received a full six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In 1996, Westlake High was also recognized as a California Distinguished School. Melody Hsu states, " I love Westlake High School! I enjoy the people I_m with and the teachers I learn from.
